Mary Murphy returns to the Judges Table

World-class dancer and choreographer Mary Murphy will return to SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE as one of the series’ resident judges. Murphy will sit alongside Nigel Lythgoe and draw upon her expertise to critique and praise the dancers throughout the competition.

“I am delighted to have Mary back on the show. Her expertise in dance, coupled with her warmth, compassion and humor, make her an excellent judge and fun to work with,” said Lythgoe, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE co-creator, executive producer and judge.

“I am thrilled and already dancing in my seat to be back as a permanent judge this season, which I’m sure will be the best ever,” said Murphy.

I agree with another commenter regarding muting the TV. Although I think Mary is nicer than Mia, I enjoyed Mia much more. Mary is just so annoying with her screaming, screeching, and laughing (especially during the auditions). Please shut it, Mary, and everything will be right with the world again. But please bring the usual judges back. Having guest judges (Megan Mullaly) is completely pointless!

since the topic is about MM coming back I have to say BOTH my husband and I will still watch and always enjoy the talented dancing but neither one of us can stomach Marys kackeling laughter and inapproprate, immature screaming. Why does she have to scream? Good God woman your 55 if your a day, act like it ! ! ! You dress and carry yourself like a beautiful, smart and dignified lady until you open your yap and scream like a crazed idiot running from a fire. I’d love to give Nigel a cork so he could shut her up and put us all out of our misery.

Mary Murphy over Mia any time. At least Mary is fun and if you look fast the laughter, she is a good technical evaluator. Mia on the other hand tries her best to act cool (including having a tatoo) when she is not. Mary rules.

Mary over Mia anytime of the day. Mary is not only fun but she is a very good technical commentator. She is very well deserving to be judge. Mia on the other hand, tries her best to be cool because she really has nothing to say (having a tatoo which she tries best to highlight does not help). BTW – what is so wrong about people over 50 having fun? MARY ROCKS.

I was so upset when I turned on my television and she (Mary) had returned. For some reason, she thinks this is the “Mary” show. It’s too bad because she has some great critique when she’s not screaming, howling, and acting like a complete 4 year old. I’m actually quite surprised that she hasn’t been spoken to. Last season was so much more enjoyable. Not sure I’ll watch which is too bad because the dancing is great.

I’m a big fan of the Hot Tamale Train! Woo Woo!! But with that being said, I’m a little disappointed with the comment she made toward Wadi tonight. This is the 1st night they danced outside they’re style! Your criticism did not seem constructive but cold. Saying he danced like a student from Dancing With the Stars, I thought was pretty cruel. This style being your expertise was a chance for you to give him real pointers to use going forward, instead you knocked him down and obviously made him look bad. I know you have to say certain things to make it entertaining for tv but I thought it was a little uncalled for. However, I am glad Mary’s back! And not wearing so much of that costume jewelry anymore… lookin’ good girl!!

My wife and I agree with those who can’t stand Mary Murphy’s screaming. Even toned down a bit, as she was last night, she is very, very irritating. I turn off the volume every time the camera focuses on her.

I’m glad Mary’s back. Yes, sometimes you have to mute her, but at least she has a sense of humor. Things were a little too serious last season. However, I don’t really like the guest judge. It would be ok if they had 3 regular judges & then added a celebrity.

I love the show and have been a devoted fan since the beginning. I’m glad Mary is back. Mia is often mean and seems to try to destroy instead of teach or guide. Mia does come up with some killer routines though! Keep her in that area and let Mary acream, yell, and laugh. When she gives someone a. ticket on the Hot Tamalie Train, its like they won first prize for the night!

Mary’s decency and confidence is impressive, also her patriotic intellect is much higher than the average American, she knows that Iveta has put America in the list of world champions. Since 1920s they have been fighting for a spot in the world with no result, till Iveta and Gherman entered the game. Nigel reminds me however of a cranky old Dad who keeps controlling his kids by comparing them to others, no vision of the new and the now, nothing is good enough for him … funny that

I think Mary Murphy is wonderful and her crazy antics are good clean fun. It’s the suggestive dancing that makes me want to turn off the television. I know 10 years olds who are watching and it’s way too suggestive for them. The dance with Ryan tonight was over the top suggestive. Too much. Glad you are back Mary!

look everybody. mary murphy is a great judge and she is fair and she rewards people for doing a good job as a dancer. I’m sure none of you know half of the things shes gone through. She was abused, beaten, and raped by her ex husband multiple times and all any of you can do is mope about how shes back on this show as a judge again. There is absolutely nothing wrong with laughing and being loud and I’m sure most of you who are critisizing her for that are just being hypocrits

Since Mary Murphy’s return to the show thiws year, I can longer watch it. Her sensless schreeching is like fingers running down a blackboard. I am not alone on this. Several friends and neighbors feel the same way and no longer watch. Would someone please explain to her that these actions do not make her a better judge.

I’m so glad Mary is back. I like her personality better than Mia but I do think she’s too loud and excitable. At one point I thought she was giong to have a heart attack. I see other bloggers say they’re not going to watch anymore because she’s back. I’m also struggling with the show this year because the dancing is not GREAT but is getting rave reviews from the judges AND the last two weeks, the wrong girl was eliminated. Nigel proclaims that you have to dance for your life and gets mad when they don’t but then eliminates people when they have a really good solo. And I don’t get this week’s elimination at all – Miranda has been getting nothing but rave reviews every week and had a great solo. The show isn’t the source of enjoyment it used to be.

I love Mary, she’s not schreeching as much and that works for me. The dancers are amazing this year but what happened to the white male dancers? It’s like watching basketball anymore. Obviously, they aren’t as talented as the other dancers and it is sad. Nigel tries to be so cool but he doesn’t quite pull it off. I like the guest judges. I enjoyed Debbie a lot. She looks terrific. Mia was so serious and dry last year. I enjoy Mary’s warmth so much better. How much is at stake for the choreographers? I don’t like all the crotch shots and the cameras are right there to get the shot. A little more dancing and a lot less sex would be good….it is almost pornographic. It is not necessary. I watch the show but cringe a lot!

So You Think You Can Dance is one of the best things that’s happened to television, but I was keenly disappointed to see Mary Murphy back as a judge–a permanent judge at that. What was Fox thinking?? What was Lythgoe thinking?? Murphy’s technical expertise is FAR OVERSHADOWED by her irritating screaming and acting out. Her presence gets attention–negative attention— a for the show. Many people I know have dropped out of watching. What a shame for the extremely talented dancers and choreographers.

I’m flabbergasted that Fox permitted screaming Mary Murphy back to SYTYCD. It’s a travesty. An insult to the audience and the dignity of the dancers and choreographers. Something’s overridden someone’s common sense. One wonders what.

I am so thrilled that Mary Murphy is back. She is a breath of fresh air that makes watching the show so much more enjoyable.Thank you Nigel for listening to your viewers . Although some of you have nothing nice to say about her and complain about her joyous screams…I love it and so do the dancers. Mary brings such a joy. I smile through every show and look forward to the next one. The dancers always leave the stage happy and well guided…not like last year when Mia Michaels tore them down and left them in tears.Mary always start all her critiques on a positive note and leave them with a positive suggestion on how they can improve their dancing. The kids love being on her hot tamale train because they see it as an honor that is coming from one of the best.

Keep up the good work Mary Murphy, because America loves you and welcomes you back with unconditional love and widespread arms. We love you!!

Thank you for bringing Mary Murphy back. She made me a fan of the show. If Mia had returned this season as a judge I would have had to miss one of my favorite shows on television. Mia is a hateful narcissist who allowed her judging to become personal on a down low level.

Not happy with this season, and it’s been my favorite show on t.v. in the past. Mary’s a great judge as far as her expertise, however, her loud reactions are so annoying, I mute the t.v. I’m not enjoying the guest judges. If the guests were dance professionals, I think it would add a great deal of credibility to the show instead of using folks who obviously know little if nothing about dance. Great dancers this season.

To Mary Murphy- Love you and Love the show, I NEVER miss an episode! This is the best show on television!!!!
