I’m an avid musical theater fan, so when I heard that West Side Story was coming to The Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles, I purchased tickets. I sat in my seat and flipped through the Playbill to see if any So You Think You Can Dancers or American Idols were in it, and sure enough I saw a familiar name—Neil Haskell!
Season 3 finalist and Season 7 all-star Neil Haskell stars as Snowboy—one of The Jets—in the 2010-2011 touring production of West Side Story. In this role, Neil does a lot of strong dancing, and he even sings and acts!
The Los Angeles show was the 2010-2011 National Tour’s first stop. The Pantages Theatre shows have been extended through January 2nd. West Side Story will spend 2011 traveling to 23 more cities.
Neil isn’t new to musical theatre. He starred as Luke in the Off-Broadway production of Altar Boyz, and he appeared on the TV musical The American Mall.
West Side Story music has been used many times on recent seasons of So You Think You Can Dance. Take a look:
-Season 4: Comfort Fedoke and Thayne Jasperson danced an Andy Blankenbuehler Broadway routine to “Cool.”
-Season 5: During Vegas week auditions, Tyce Diorio choreographed the female piece to “America” and choreographed the male piece to “Cool.”
-Season 5: Kayla Radomski and Kupono Aweau took on “The Dance At the Gym” by Joey Dowling.
-Season 7: All-Star Kathryn McCormick partnered finalist Robert Roldan to “Cool” by Spencer Liff.
