Get Excited for National Dance Day

So You Think You Can Dance executive producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe would like to declare July 31, NATIONAL DANCE DAY.

WHAT: NATIONAL DANCE DAY, a grassroots initiative that encourages the nation, young and old, to move!  Individuals, families, organizations and communities from across the nation come together through their creative expression in dance.  Any style of dance is welcome and imagination is recommended in order to get the most out of this celebratory day.

WHEN: Saturday, July 31

WHY: To continue to generate national awareness for dance, a medium of expression and storytelling which, through shows like So You Think You Can Dance, has proven its value in bringing individuals from all walks of life together through a positive platform that has no boundaries and cultivates imagination and passion. Most importantly, the day is intended to promote health and wellness nationwide.

Nigel has been tweeting up a storm about National Dance Day, a.k.a. D-Day. He said the goal is to “prove that the ‘Power of Dance’ can MOVE an entire Country!” So get up off the couch and put on your dancing shoes on July 31st. Share your D-Day ideas in the SYTYCD forums and stay tuned to this site for more information to come.

Do you have any suggestions for music we could use in slow motion version of your dance….we are having a great time practicing and mastering it. thanks

I found that with this routine, the slightest bit of tensing up will mess up that section. I’m a 14 year old guy figure skater and I’m probably going to record this music on my phone and use it, and the routine, to loosen me up so I’m not so stiff on the ice. I also might teach this to some of my friends.

  11. Sk8ingKing - wrote:

Also, on National Dance Day I am competing so I’m going to use that routine to warm up and from Saturday, July 24- Saturday, July 31 will be my National Dance Week since I will be under a lot of pressure on the 31st. At the ice arena that whole week, when we have free time, I will try to get everyone to do some improv skating because figure skating to me IS a form of dance.

Monarch joins in National Dance Day fun
Supported individuals and staff line dance in pursuit of healthy lifestyle

New Bern, N.C. – The joy of dancing is universal, even for those who may be confined to wheelchairs or unable to speak. Participants in Monarch’s Health Drive Day Program in New Bern proved it on a recent visit to Rivertowne Ballroom.

More than 25 individuals supported by Monarch, including those with significant physical and mental disabilities, visited the local dance studio to witness a dance exhibition and practice their own dance moves. The event was in preparation for Fox television’s So You Think You Can Dance National Dance Day July 31.

Local site supervisor Erma Brault thought that participating in the event would be a perfect way for individuals supported by Monarch to get active because they love music and movement. Community inclusion specialist Eileen Bress agreed and set up and opportunity for them to get an up close experience at Rivertowne Ballroom in downtown New Bern.

Owner Joyce Price and instructor Bernie Mallon demonstrated the waltz and swing dance for the visitors. Joyce and instructor B.C. Beach taught them line dances including “Car Wash” and the “Cupid Shuffle” to perform on National Dance Day.

Bryan, who does not verbalize words, could not contain his glee during the dancing. Although confined to a wheelchair, his feet and hands were moving energetically to the music, and the sounds he made expressed pure delight.

“I loved the dancing. I want to do that again,” said Lucy B., another supported individual.

In addition to planning activities for National Dance Day, the group hopes to schedule a regular dance class at the ballroom. It may also form a dance troupe in the future to share the talents and joys of adults and children living with disabilities.

Monarch provides support and resources to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental illness, and substance abuse issues throughout North Carolina. Monarch is a nonprofit and is an affiliated chapter of The Arc of North Carolina and The Arc of the United States. We will have residents standing, some with walkers and even some in wheel chairs, but we will be dancing. . Just cause you can’t stand doesn’t mean you can’t dance. DANCE IS IN THE HEART.
