Today Nigel Lythgoe Tweeted:
Hawaiian Mark Kanemura will be a great addition to Season 7 as an All-Star specializing in jazz, hip hop, Broadway, and cultural dance. The Season 4 third place guy made an instant impression on fans and on the judges with a Mia Michaels’ contemporary piece to “Beautiful” (aka “A Tim Burton Wedding”) with his partner Chelsie Hightower. His partnership with ballroom beauty Chelsie remains one of the strongest pairings on the show. Who would have guessed that a contemporary dancer and ballroom dancer would have created magic in the genre of hip hop? When Mark and Chelsie met with choreographers Tabitha and Napoleon D’umo, they created one of the most unforgettable dances in SYTYCD history: “Bleeding Love.” The piece earned NappyTabs an Outstanding Choreography Emmy nomination and Mark and Chelsie returned to the SYTYCD stage during Season 5 to recreate the nominated piece. During Mark’s last week on Season 4, he performed “The Garden” jazz dance with Courtney Galiano, which was one of the most talked about dances of the season and was a great way to introduce Sonya Tayeh to the show.
Since appearing on So You Think You Can Dance in 2008, Mark has gone on to work on huge projects. As Nigel alluded to in his tweet, Mark returned last week from touring with Lady Gaga in The Monster Ball Tour which brought Mark from Canada to the US to Europe and Australia. He also appears in Gaga’s much talked about “Telephone” music video, as well as Janet Jackson’s “Make Me” music video. Mark performed on the 2009 Emmy Awards show and danced in the opening number of Carrie Underwood: An All-Star Holiday Special.
